On 11 July, Manchester hosted the annual EU Citizens’ Gathering—now in its fourth year. The event brought together over 150 attendees from across the UK, including EU citizens, community leaders, civil society organisations, diplomats and policymakers, for a day of connection, discussion, and action.
With more than 30 speakers across the programme, this year’s gathering shone a light on the key issues facing EU citizens in the UK today—celebrating their contributions while tackling the challenges ahead.
Opening the day, EU Ambassador Pedro Serrano reminded attendees that people are at the heart of the EU–UK relationship, calling the event a celebration of “the invaluable contributions that millions of EU citizens make to the social, economic, and cultural fabric of British society”. Manchester City Council Leader Bev Craig, joined in this message, paying tribute to the role EU citizens play in the life and energy of the city.
The programme featured contributions from the EU Commissioner for Justice, Michael McGrath, ambassadors from across Europe, and UK-based organisations including the3million, Settled, SAFE Alliance Scotland and the Independent Monitoring Authority. Panel sessions ranged from rights and representation to reshaping the conversation around migration and inclusion.
The afternoon was packed with workshops, allowing participants to dive deeper into key issues—from legal support on EU Settlement Scheme applications and fundraising, to youth mobility, tackling racism, and strengthening networks for EU citizens across the UK.
Vice-President of the European Parliament, Katarina Barley, closed the day by recognising the strength of the EU citizen community in the UK:
“At this time of resetting EU–UK relations, our dialogue is crucial to strengthen our shared values.”
A big thank you goes to all who contributed and attended, including our moderators, volunteers, and the University of Manchester for hosting the event. And a special mention to the EU Consular Network in Manchester and the Consulates of Hungary, Romania and Spain for their support.
Manchester—home to around 350,000 EU citizens—was a fitting backdrop for a day focused on connection, collaboration, and community.
