Living in a new country comes with opportunities and challenges. For EU citizens and other migrants in the UK, navigating work, community life, and civic participation can sometimes feel overwhelming. Having the right support, guidance, and access to learning can make it easier to get involved, build confidence, and make a real impact in your community.
Local Government Training Programme
According to the 2021 Census, 5.34 million EU passport holders were living in the UK. The largest nThe Social Equity Centre (SEC) has launched its first Local Government Training Programme, designed to give migrants living in London the skills, knowledge, and confidence to apply for roles in local government.
- Five workshop sessions (two in-person, three online) in October and November
- One-to-one support for job applications
- Graduation event with a certified certificate
All sessions are inclusive, respectful, and follow best practice in equal opportunities. Participants must attend all five sessions to complete the programme and receive the certificate.
Free Digital Learning Resources from Aston University
Separately, Aston University, Migrant Democracy project, CLAUK and SEC have developed two free online courses to support migrants across the UK. These are designed to raise awareness about the opportunities for migrants to participate in civic, political, and public life, and to help migrant support organisations and integration practitioners embed participation into their services.
The courses include:
- Practical information on ways to participate in civic and community life
- Research insights, case studies, and real-life scenarios
- Activities and exercises to apply learning
- Links to additional support
The two courses:
1. Digital guide for migrants – Practical guidance for individuals on participating in civic, political, and public life.
2. Introductory course for migrant support organisations – Helps organisations embed participation into their services and better support migrants.
